Sex Tape piece of art was created for an exhibition, “Sex Be With you” curated by Charmaine Tam for Novalis Art Design, which explores sex and the various power dynamics associated with it. The group show took place in Hong Kong from June to August 2023.
Experimenting with the boundaries between their relationship, their practice and their audience, the couple forming Batten and Kamp ask themselves how much of their romantic relationship they are willing to give to their professional collaboration, and how much of themselves they wish to offer to the public.
The work depicts a coffee table made of stainless steel and glass, the material containing an encoded USB key. The sex tape in question is therefore inaccessible unless the couple decide to destroy their work of art.
In the artist's statement for the exhibition, Batten and Kamp declare: “With Sex Tape, we depart from our usual line of inquiry to explore a personal question. We engage in a dialogue with our audience and explore what we really want from each other. It's about limits and temptation, vulnerability and the self-perpetuating commodification of our relationships.
