After his “Skin” exhibition with Curatorial+Co, Morgan Stokes, who then examined the body's outermost layer, now skims its surface with “Skeleton” to examine its interior.
The exhibition questions the importance of an object's structure and revolves around the skeleton, symbolizing the naked essence, the stripped-down truth, and thus becoming a symbol of the search for authenticity. Just as the skeleton provides both the constraint and the possibility of movement in a living being, the underlying principles and frameworks of art both limit and liberate.
Although the exhibition is animated by a bare, elemental current, tensions define the space: clarity versus darkness, lightness versus heaviness, fullness versus emptiness, creation versus destruction. Balance, tonality, space and, above all, form: the elements of painting have been amputated from one another to be examined in a material dimension.
Through his artistic practice, Morgan Stokes explores different mediums, deconstructing them in order to extract their fundamental elements. Skeleton is a dialogue between body and matter, a contemplation of what makes a painting in the digital age.
Exhibition on view from October 9 to 26, 2024 at Curatorial+Co: Shop G01/G02/80 William St, Woolloomooloo, Sydney, NSW 2011, Australia.
